DOCUMENTARY FILMMAKING, SENSORY-FRIENDLY PLAY AMONG RESTON COMMUNITY CENTER’S 2018 NEW SUMMER CAMP OFFERINGS (PDF)

Kids at RCC campRESTON, VA – Reston Community Center is gearing up for an exciting 2018 summer camp season, with unique selections that offer something for everyone.

Want to play chess, kick a soccer ball or practice tae kwon do? Want to make jewelry, play paintball or design a video game? You can find all that and much more through RCC.

“RCC is very excited to provide a significant increase in our selection of full-day camp programs this summer,” said Eileen Boone, RCC’s Director of Leisure & Learning. “We are also offering several new camps that I know will delight kids.”

A highlight among the full-day RCC camps this summer is Documentary Filmmaking: Summer Studio for Teens. During this four-week camp for ages 13-16, participants will learn documentary filmmaking from Peabody Award-winning filmmaker Rebekah Wingert-Jabi. Wingert-Jabi, whose recent work includes Another Way of Living: The Story of Reston, VA. Rebekah will teach filming, editing and story development basics, and teens will produce their own short film exploring openness in Reston today. The camp culminates in a public film screening on August 24. This camp will run July 9 to August 3.

“Having a Peabody Award-winning filmmaker in our community who is equally invested in using documentary film techniques to capture Reston’s history and potential gives us an opportunity to engage with teens and learn from them,” said RCC Executive Director Leila Gordon. “We could not be more excited to see their stories.”

Another new offering for 2018 is “We Rock the Spectrum,” a half-day camp (ages 6-11) that promotes strength, movement, sensory processing and positive social interaction in an inclusive, therapeutic environment. Activities include a zip line, rock wall, trampoline and obstacle course. This camp will run June 25-29.

Here’s a selection of RCC’s other special summer opportunities with space available:

Trendy Jewelry Making – Campers will unleash their creative side at week-long, half-day sessions where they will create up to five custom-made pieces. Two sessions: July 2-6 (no camp July 4) and July 9-13.

STEAM I – This half-day, week-long (July 9-13) camp focuses on the basics of engineering as campers create different structures (bridges, catapults and roller coasters, among them) and Rube Goldberg machines. Also for young engineers, check out House of Cards (June 18-22, ages 8-12), where campers will use playing cards or other materials to create a whimsical structure.

Green Earth Rangers – Campers ages 11 to 14 will work towards solving real-life environmental issues in Northern Virginia at this new, full-day camp from July 30 to August 3. They will work with naturalists on improving outdoor habitats at various Fairfax County sites.

Information on all of RCC camps can be found online at www.restoncommunitycenter.com. Registration is ongoing, but camps are filling quickly so register today.
